Fitness is an overwhelming and intimidating concept that hinders people from getting active. With TON, you can workout on your own time, in the comfort of your own home. Rather than letting fitness consume you, it can now be an integral part of your life. Get active, wherever you can, whenever you can, and do what you can. Your workout routine is your TON. By using a digital spotter, you can now learn the proper and safe way to complete your workouts through a digital double that shows an abstract representation of you.Through words of encouragement and various motivating factors, TON helps you achieve your fitness goals in a fun, simple and empowering way.
By removing the negative stigma fitness currently holds, we hope to change the way fitness is perceived. It no longer needs to be a time-consuming or stressful chore, but a way of life that allows you to become the best version of yourself.
Ton consists of 5 simple components: a mat with handles or a bar as your workout equipment, a mobile application, a digital spotter that hooks up to your television that then projects your double in an abstracted yet accurate form through motion capture, and a digital trainer that provides helpful workout tips, data and words of encouragement.
The digital spotter in a small sensor that sits in front of the TV. It uses both a CMOS and LIDAR sensor to track the user. With this data processed onboard it is sent directly to the TV.
Tón uses a neural network to process the user's position and posture, providing an augmented view into their performance.
Tón is powered by two powerful electromagnetic spindles which are able to replicate varying weight through force and resistance.
Tón is able to function in a number of setups. It can either be used as a standalone device, fully controlled through the grips, or as an IOT device connected to a TV via the digital spotter.
Tón inspires its users to become more active by creating easy to understand metrics. Tón will encourage users to at least lift a cumulative weight of a ton a day. This is similar to how someone might count steps or count calories. By applying it to weights, weight lifting is much more accessible to people less acquainted with reps and sets.
Through extensive research, we were able to pull one key insight that helped guide the entirety of our design: women are an underrepresented demographic in the fitness industry. Due to their busy lifestyles as mothers and career-driven individuals, women don’t have the time to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Going to the gym is intimidating and overwhelming, not to mention time-consuming. Most fitness products are also very masculine and take up too much space within the home. With TON, we are able to show that this simple and compact piece of equipment can be stored in your home, allowing you to stay active on your own time in the comfort of your own home.
It was important for tón to use data in an informative way. The digital double acts to mirror the user showing their form while allowing for insightful data to be overlaid. Early development focused on using a digital 3d avatar to show the data however later experimentation into neural networks allowed for greater flexibility and augmentation.
Workout equipment is often large and obtrusive. Our development process focused on using technology to dramatically reduce form factor. The final device is able to fit the necessary technology in an extremely thin 1.5in case.
Scale models were used to prototype the main interaction points. This ensured that tón would be ergonomic for all users.
We have more exciting features on the way! In the near future, your at-home device can be used for multiple people in the household. The mat will be able to detect the weight of each user, and will ask you if the correct user is activating the device as soon as you stand on it. Don’t like working out alone? You’ll also be able to get active with all your workout buddies. This will allow you and your friends to motivate and hold each other accountable to reach your TON together! We will also be selling the device in different colors to better suit the aesthetics of your home! Stay tuned!
